About Cataract

Inside our eye we have a natural lens. This lens acts like a camera. The lens bends light rays that enter the eye in a manner that the rays fall on the retina and help us see clearly.

However, as age increases, the lens loses its transparency and starts to get cloudy. This is the onset of cataract. With the development of cataract the vision starts to deteriorate and it is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield making things look blurry, hazy or less colourful.

How is cataract treated?

Treatment for cataract is in the form of surgery. At Mumbai Eye Care, Cataract surgery is done using most advanced technology using Centurion Vision System that offers the best outcomes after cataract surgery.

FAQ's

cataract is clouding of the natural lens in the eye. Ageing is the most common cause of cataract. With age, the normal transparent lens starts to get opaque and this leads to decrease in vision.
The earliest symptom of cataract is increased glare and decrease in night vision. With increase in cataract, your vision will start getting blurred and this affects your routine activities. On external appearance your eyes may not look different or may not show any different colour or spot in cases of early cataract. Only when the cataract becomes very matured or white that one can see a white spot in the centre of the eye.
Surgery is the only treatment for cataract. The surgery involves a simple day care procedure where a small incision is made that measures around 2 mm and using phacoemusification machine we can remove the cataract from this small incision. After which an Intraocular lens is implanted in the from the same small incision. The whole procedure lasts for less than 10 minutes. This surgery is carried out using drops to anaesthetise the eye and there is no need for any injection. Also after the procedure there is no patch put on the eye and patient can resume the normal activities right from the same evening.
Most of the patients gain almost 85 - 90 % of their vision within few hours of the surgery. Rest of the vision improves with drops over next few days. You may feel the lights to be brighter after surgery. One gets adjusted to it in a few days.
We perform a battery of tests prior to cataract surgery that include the lens power measurement and evaluation of the other eye parts such as cornea and retina. Once we have evaluated your eye type, we will be able to explain you in detail about the options best suitable for you in the form of Monofocal lenses ( that help correction of your distance vision with one needs glasses for near), Toric lenses ( for correction of cylindrical power on the cornea along with distance vision correction with need for glasses for near), Bifocal lenses ( for spectacle independence for distance and near) and trifocal lenses ( for spectacle independence for distance, near and intermediate distance).
Cataract surgery is a day care procedure. One can start working the very same day after the surgery. Patients should avoid hair wash for a couple of days after surgery. To avoid strenuous exercises for a few days after the procedure. Patients can also travel immediately after surgery
